Credit file letter

Ask a lender to correct a credit file entry that is wrong, or to remove one that is right as a gesture — the two are not the same letter. Free, no sign-up.

Everyone calls it getting a late payment taken off, but there are two letters and only one of them is a right. If the entry is WRONG, you dispute it: the lender must investigate and correct it, and it must tell the credit agencies. If the entry is RIGHT, nothing obliges anyone to remove it — you are asking for a gesture, and the letter that works says so plainly, explains the one thing that went wrong and shows what has changed since.

Working…

Answer the accuracy question honestly, because it decides everything. If the entry is WRONG you are disputing it and the law is behind you: the lender must investigate, correct the record and tell the agencies it reported to. If the entry is RIGHT, no law requires anyone to remove it — you are asking for a gesture, the lender may say no, and in the United States a furnisher that deletes accurate information is arguably breaking its own accuracy duties. Disputing an entry you know to be correct is the one thing that guarantees failure: it gets marked verified, and the goodwill route you had is gone. Send a goodwill request once, to the lender and not to the credit agency — the agency only records what the lender reports and cannot remove an entry the lender stands behind. One cause, one paragraph, evidence attached: a hospital discharge letter, a redundancy notice, the bank's own confirmation that a direct debit failed on a switch. Never pay anyone who promises to remove accurate entries; that is what credit repair scams sell, and there is nothing to buy. Late payments and defaults drop off on their own after six years in the United Kingdom and seven in the United States, so check the age of the entry before spending effort on it. Nothing here is legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can a correct late payment be removed?

Only if the lender chooses to, and nothing obliges it. That is why the letter says so instead of pretending otherwise: a goodwill request dressed up as a complaint is handled as a complaint and refused as one. Where the entry is wrong, it is the opposite — correcting it is your right, and the lender must tell the agencies it reported to.

Is this document free?
