Cease communication letter

Tell a debt collector in writing to stop contacting you, to stop calling you at work, or to deal with your lawyer instead. Free, no sign-up.

United States, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Write to a collector that you want it to stop contacting you and it must stop — with three narrow exceptions: to say it is giving up, to say it may sue, or to say it is about to. What it does not do is end the debt, and it does not stop a lawsuit. Two narrower protections sit alongside it and cost you nothing: a collector may not call you at work once it knows your employer forbids it, and it must deal with your lawyer once it knows you have one.

Working…

This stops the LETTERS, not the debt. The money is still owed, the collector may still sue you for it, and it may still report the account. If what you want is proof that the debt is yours, send the debt validation letter first — silencing a collector does not get you the documents, and once it has to stop writing it has little reason to send them. Like the validation letter, this one is the United States regime for third-party DEBT COLLECTORS: it does not reach the original creditor chasing its own loan. Saying that you refuse to pay carries the same duty to stop, but it tells the collector it will get nothing without going to court, and that can bring a lawsuit forward — leave it out if you might want to settle. Send it by a method that proves the date, keep the receipt, and keep a copy: the duty starts when the collector receives it, so the receipt is the whole of your proof. Do not make a payment or admit the debt in the meantime — either can restart the clock on how long you can be sued. Nothing here is legal advice, and your state may give you more than federal law does.

Frequently asked questions

Does this cancel the debt?

No. It stops the collector contacting you; it does not stop the debt, the credit reporting or a lawsuit. In fact a collector that can no longer write to you has one route left, and it is the court. Send it when the contact itself is the problem — and if what you want is proof, send the validation letter first.

Is this document free?

Yes. The Cease communication letter generator is completely free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many you create.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The form is turned into a PDF inside your browser — your details never leave your device and nothing is stored.

Can I edit the document afterwards?

Yes. Download the PDF, or open it straight in the editor to adjust the wording, add a logo or sign it by hand.

Are my details remembered?

Your own name, address and contact details are saved in your browser only, so the next document is almost filled in already. Clearing your browser data removes them.
